A BAND A DAY WITH NXNE: FRIENDS THREE FACTS: • Both videos for “I’m His Girl” and “Friend Crush” were co-directed by lead singer/lyricist Samantha Urbani. • The band was originally known as Perpetual Crush. Now that’s the title of one of their songs. • Samantha and Lesley are lifelong… friends, having met at age seven at school. Samantha, Nikki and Matt all worked together at Angelica Kitchen, a vegan cafe in Manhattan. Oliver attended Samantha’s “wild satanic” house parties, and that’s how friends became Friends. A BAND A DAY WITH NXNE: ODONIS ODONIS THREE FACTS: •Hollandaze was self-recorded by Dan Tzenos from over 40 tunes. He added Gibson and Whale for the live show. • We have to agree with Tzenos when he calls non-working computers “like the wors[t] thing ever.” • Tzenos’ only possession is a VHS collection. Hey, as long as he’s got Wayne’s World 2, he doesn’t really need anything else. Recorded in 1999 and released in 2001, it was the soul legend’s last recorded performance. • For their fourth album - 2010’s The Garden- Bran Van returned to their original label, Audiogram Records. A BAND A DAY WITH NXNE: ANDRE WILLIAMS & THE SADIES THREE FACTS: • In the 1980s, Williams was homeless and broke due to drug addictions and alcohol abuse. Now 75, he’s since cleaned up. He’s also had a good 2012 so far with two releases - Hoods and Shades and Night & Day. • Album title Night & Day owes a lot to the change and sobering up Andre Williams went through while recording. Dallas Good says the first session in 2008 was “good” but he and the rest of The Sadies were worried about Andre. A few years later when they reconvened, Williams was clean, sharp and pretty much a new person. • Neko Case loves The Sadies. A BAND A DAY WITH NXNE: GOOD RIDDANCE THREE FACTS • They won’t be enjoying Toronto’s finest street meats: They’re all vegetarian or vegan and supporters of PETA. • On May 27th, 2007, Good Riddance played their last show. In February 2012 they got back together because of an “organic desire to play and hear the material again.” Yay. • Happy birthday Russ Rankin. The label’s also worked with other acts playing NXNE such as 2:54, Bass Drum Of Death and Friends. NXNE is a chance to see if her moves evolved. • Bleached subscribes to the Spinal Tap school of drummers… Hopefully with a lower death rate. • Jennifer is also adept at fashion design. Dress to impress. Bleached just kicked off their European tour but will be back with silky locks a flowing for NXNE. The band play thrice at the Silver Dollar Room.
